Sealing with felt: keeps tight, stays open
Felt fulfils special sealing tasks. As a porous material, however, it remains permeable to gases.
If a seal needs to protect against dust and dirt, be permeable to air and have favourable friction behaviour, felt is the right material!
Felt seals bridge or close spaces in numerous areas of application - thanks to its excellent recovery properties, the material is used particularly in moving applications.
Benefit from the advantages of the sustainable, biodegradable alternative to silicone, acrylic etc. and use VFG felts to solve individual sealing tasks!

Sealing against dirt and dust
In household appliances, power tools and tumble dryers, felt seals protect the condenser or motor from the ingress of small fibres and coarse dust particles. This guarantees uninterrupted performance and also increases the longevity of the appliance.

Felt shaft seals are a more robust, more durable and more cost-effective solution than lip seals. The felt ring sits in an annular groove in the bearing housing and its inner radius surrounds the rotating shaft. The finest dust and dirt particles cannot penetrate the felt and are kept safely away from the bearing. A one-off oil impregnation of the felt ring before mounting permanently prevents abrasion on the friction surface to the shaft. The felt is relubricated from the bearing using grease or splash oil. The porosity of the felt ensures constant pressure equalisation in the bearing housing.

The main bearings of wind turbines must be able to withstand severe temperature fluctuations. This is why VFG has developed customised felt seals that can withstand these high requirements. On the one hand, our felt seals prevent the greases, oils and hydrocarbons used in the drive train from escaping from the bearing. On the other hand, they ensure that dirt particles, sand and condensation do not penetrate the bearing.
