Damping with felt: setting the tone, on quiet soles

In your own four walls, in the car or around machines - felts are ideal for dampening noise and reducing vibrations. Thanks to the fibre composite, they are able to absorb even loud sound waves. This versatile jack-of-all-trades can not only absorb unwanted noise, but can also produce soft tones and brilliant sounds.

Damping with felt

Industrial application

Damping vibrations and noise - felts are used in numerous industrial applications.

Here are a few examples:

  •     Vibrations generated by machines/power tools can be minimised with felt. If the machine itself is exposed to fewer vibrations, the risk of material fatigue is reduced - the service life of the machine increases
considerably. Felt counteracts unwanted vibrations and noise thanks to its cushioning and sound-absorbing properties.

  •     Felt prevents rattling noises in noise-critical areas. Among other things, where painted surfaces are joined with plastic parts, movement noise is dampened by intermediate layers of felt.

Felt sets the right tone

Due to their uniform product structure, felts are able to produce brilliant sounds:

Used as a damper in the piano:

  •     If the note is to break, a felt-covered damper is placed against the piano string.
This moderates the vibration without producing any background noise.

  •     Felt minimises unpleasant rattling noises from the piano mechanism.

Used as a damper in the loudspeaker:

  •     Audio or loudspeaker felts prevent the sound from spreading to the loudspeaker housing and thus ensure good sound.

Indoor application

Felt dampens the noise level both within a room and between neighbouring rooms and protects strained ears from external noise sources.

  • Modern workspaces are often furnished with concrete, tiles or stainless steel - these materials may look elegant, but they reflect noise in an unpleasant, stress-inducing way. Carpets, curtains or felt wall panelling can help here. The natural textiles absorb sound and prevent echo formation: perfect for acoustically optimising large rooms.

  • In the home, felt-covered upholstered furniture is an excellent way to break up the sound in a room and create a cosy atmosphere. From stylish lamps and cosy seat cushions to tasteful home accessories - felt not only acts as a small sound absorber thanks to its specific bending and resilience behaviour, but also enhances the appearance of any home.

  • Felt insulates downpipes in walls and fully fulfils the requirements for minimum sound insulation in accordance with DIN 4109-1: 2018
